INDEPENDENT LIFEBOATS VS RNLI.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
At first glance, all lifeboat crews appear to share a single mission: saving lives at sea. While that’s true, there are important differences between organisations like the RNLI and independent lifeboat stations like Humber Rescue.

Around a quarter of lifeboat stations in the UK are independent. Humber Rescue is proud to be one of them. The closest independent lifeboat station to us is Hornsea Inshore Rescue. Like many others, we are operated entirely by volunteers and rely solely on public support to keep our service running.

We are also proud members of the National Independent Lifeboat Association (NILA), a UK-wide network of independent stations working together to promote safety, share best practices, and represent local lifeboat services on a national stage.

Despite the vital work we do, independent lifeboat charities are often overshadowed by the high-profile marketing campaigns of the RNLI. This makes it more challenging for smaller, community-led services like ours to raise funds and awareness.
Here’s how Humber Rescue compares with the RNLI:

WHO WE ARE
Humber Rescue is an independent lifeboat charity based on the Humber Estuary. We operate 365 days a year and rely entirely on volunteer crew and public donations. We are not part of the RNLI, nor do we receive any government or RNLI funding.
RNLI relies on a combination of full-time paid staff and volunteers, supported by centralised training, logistics, and administration.
WHY IT MATTERS?
Independent lifeboats like Humber Rescue must work harder to raise essential funds. Supporting us ensures that your contribution directly benefits a local, front-line rescue service.
FUNDING
Humber Rescue is funded entirely through community donations, sponsorships, events, and local support. We operate on a modest budget, ensuring every pound goes directly to life-saving operations.
The RNLI is Supported by national campaigns, corporate sponsorships, legacies, and investments, with a wide-reaching fundraising network.
RESPONSE AREA
Humber Rescue covers the Humber Estuary, one of the UK’s busiest and most dangerous waterways. We regularly support Humberside Police, the Coastguard, and other emergency services.
RNLI operates from stations across the UK and Ireland, covering both coastal and inland areas.
OPERATIONS & CREW
Humber Rescue is run entirely by trained volunteers, committed to saving lives without financial compensation. Our crews undergo rigorous training to meet professional standards.
RNLI relies on a combination of full-time paid staff and volunteers, supported by centralised training, logistics, and administration.
